Kick Back, Relax…and Stay Fit on Vacation

Vacations are often a time of luxury, and many vacationers relish having the time to kick back and relax. I did during my recent, wonderful, amazing and relaxing vacation to Mexico. However, I was easily reminded of all the temptations that vacationing brings. It’s hard to remember to make healthy and smart choices while in a beautiful, tropical paradise. However, throwing away all of your hard gym work while vacationing can lead to a depressing reality when you get home. Take it from me. The first couple of days back? It was hard to adjust.

Staying in shape while traveling can seem tough, but there are plenty of ways to keep the pounds off and stay active no matter how long your trip lasts. Whether you're traveling across the country or around the globe, the effort you put in to keep yourself feeling your best will pay off when your vacation comes to an end. It’s hard, but it’s worth it when you return. Just remember some simple tips when heading off to and enjoying your getaway.

Watch What You Eat

Step 1

Eat foods you're familiar with at least two meals per day. While one of the joys of traveling is trying local cuisines, knowing the nutrition information for what you're eating will make counting calories and balancing your daily diet easier.

Step 2

Snack on local produce. Snacking on produce is a healthy option and an easy way to try new foods while you're on vacation. Speak to your concierge to find the best produce stands or stores near your hotel.

Step 3

Stock your hotel fridge with bottled water and healthy snacks. Having snacks when you get back to your hotel room will reduce the likelihood you'll turn to room service when hunger strikes. Room service menus typically offer high-calorie foods.

Step 4

Choose a salad as your entree. When dining out, opt for a fresh, healthy salad over a cheeseburger or pasta entree. If you're trying out a new buffet, fill your plate at the salad bar instead of testing out the many side dishes and desserts on display. Eating a healthy salad with a low-fat or low-calorie dressing is an easy way to stay fit. Alternatively, try topping your salad with low-fat cottage cheese or greek yogurt instead of dressing for extra protein.

Step 5

Limit your alcohol and soda consumption as much as possible. Stay hydrated and avoid the empty calories associated with alcohol and sugary beverages by drinking plenty of water throughout your trip. This is especially important if you plan to include physical activity into your vacation or are visiting a hot climate.

Stay Active

Step 1

Book a hotel with an on-site gym or a contract with a local fitness center. Having access to a gym will allow you to continue your typical fitness routine while on vacation.

Step 2

Visit local outdoor sites that offer opportunities to get physical. Many vacation spots have outdoor activities that will get your heart rate up such as hiking, tennis, golf, surfing and swimming. Try a new physical activity each day to mix up your routine and to maximize your vacation experience. For example, spend one day hitting balls on the putting green and another catching waves on a surf board.

Step 3

Walk to your destination, if feasible, while you're out sightseeing. Skip the cab, bus or subway train while you're out and about for the day. Many popular vacation spots have plenty of sights to see within a few miles of each other, so plan accordingly.

#####

I loved my time in Mexico. I enjoyed the food, the drinks, the weather. I’m glad I was able to take advantage of my beautiful surroundings and maintain my active lifestyle. AND I didn’t overindulge. I simply enjoyed in moderation. I’m happy to be back and I’m blessed to be in a profession that teaches others how to enjoy life to the fullest.
