Muscle matters for more than just strength. Muscle supports joints, supports blood circulation and fat burning. Just to name a few. Remember, muscle does more than just "make you look good". Muscle makes your heart pump, your digestion system work, your diaphragm expand. Muscles are the largest component of lean body mass. Muscles help maintain posture, generate heat, regulate breathing and protect vital organs.
Many believed that muscle loss and body degeneration was a natural part of aging, but as Jack and Elaine LaLanne have proven, losing muscle is NOT a natural part of aging. We are 75% responsible to what happens to our body as we celebrate birthdays. Scientific literature demonstrates that diet alterations and regular exercise can help adults maintain current muscle mass or even restore lost muscle.
Is it ever too late to gain muscle? No, exercise and nutrition have a substantial impact on muscle health. Studies show that resistance training can be an efficient approach to building muscle. Resistance can be provided by barbells, dumbbells, kettlebells, resistance bands or your own body weight.
In a study, Fiatarone et al, studied the effects of an 8 week high-intensity resistance training program for frail adults (average age 90). At the end of the training, leg strength had increased by 175% and muscle increased 9%. This is huge, but transferring that to functional movement, such as standing, walking, well you can see the amazing results that can be restored.
